What's all this whining I hear about Sombra not being bad enough? Or getting enough screen time? Or not being developed enough?

Seriously?

Calm the fuck down.

He's going to be back. The lack of exposition confirms this.

Further proof:
When Cadance's magic shield sliced off his horn, we saw the severed horn piece act on its own (melting into the ground). Later we saw Sombra repair his horn completely. What has been established? That Sombra can regenerate (his horn anyways).
What happened the last moment we saw Sombra? He got obliterated into shards by the crystal heart magicyness... and we saw his horn (intact) fly away (towards the viewer).

He'll be back.

Besides, the episode wasn't about Sombra. It was about Twilight Sparkle.
What happened at the end? Twilight was allowed to advance in her studies. Celestia and Luna are preparing her for bigger, badder, showdown that has yet to happen.
My guess is that we're going to see a winged Twilight at the end of this season.

I'd like to see him come back but sadly, it's been confirmed by the writers that he's been Killed Off For Real.

I want to like this for the Sombra comments, but I really don't like the idea of a winged Twilight. :-/

So what is your secret?

I don't consider myself stupid and I'm a total sucker for this kind of foresights, reading between the lines and interpreting mysterious innuendos, but I totally failed to foresee this one and only in hindsight I notice how I totally should have.

If you say so. Sobmre aside, the enpisode just had poor writing in general (for an MLP episode) This show tends to be episodic, never carrying a story arc more than two episodes. And the entiretime I watched it I was thinking "Explain show! Explain!!!!"

There were just too many things brushed under the mat, too many things never explained or spoken of again. dont get me wrong, It was an awesome episode and I still love every episode to date, but by MLP standards the episode itself was weak.

People are just comparing him to Discord, which isn't really fair as they are two different types of villians. Hopefully Twilight won't become an alicorn, at least not until the end of the show. It would upset the balance of unicorn/pegasus/earth pony for the mane 6, and she would be changed as a character. If she had to be an alicorn at all, it should be on the final episode of the show. Sombra is more than likely to come back, probably at the end of the season.

I have to agree with you <3 King Sombra was only just the beginning ~ Twilight's going to have bigger problems than this to help her with her studies. When you say we'll probably see a winged Twilight, my mind was on a similar track.

I've been talking with *WeskerWolf and I predict that Twilight may be one of the next Princess's. Maybe not an Alicorn (Unisus or Pegacorn if you prefer) like Celestia, Luna, or Cadence, but maybe the first Unicorn Princess ~ I'm really excited to see what's going to happen especially since the whole beginning is filled with mystique :eager:

In my opinion, a lot of us bronies are butthurting over King Sombrero because we've been spoiled. We've been given villains who are very character-driven and (IMO) have realistic personalities. Nightmare Moon is a jealous youth resenting her powerful and loved big sister, and Discord is simply an objectivist who does everything for his own amusement because he actually can. Sombra is a different kind of villain. He's more primal, more of an animal or an ideal, of fear and the dark nature inside everyone. I can't speak for anyone else but I for one had the crap scared out of me when Sombra appeared. He wasn't shown a lot and yet he inspired fear in everyone, even those who had never heard or seen much of him.

Just my thoughts. Feel free to disagree. I'm open.

People just had expectations.

I just wanted to see new ponyponyponypony... didn't really have any expecations.

But I've noticed this trend... Where the artists/writers like to take things in new directions. Try new story twists. New character types. ;)
Sooo... If anything, my only expectation was that they were going to do something new and different with this villain. And oh hey! They did!

I also thought he was creepy. Much more aggressive/dark than the other villains... Often times it's what isn't shown than builds the fear. I know I was afraid of shadows when I was little.

Sombra? Not disappointed. I eagerly await the rest of the season.

He was supposed to be like ticking time bomb and the episode was about Twilights job to stop it before t was too late.

Sure it would have been nice if he got more screentime and was developed more but he served his purpose. Plus, at least they did something different now. They've already done the Miain-sis-must-work-together-to-stop-the-bad-guy-tjing with 3 villans now. It was starting to get a bit repetitive.

I thought for a cartoon villain Sombra served his purpose pretty well as an overshadowing force of dread. I really hope that the writers came up with something other than turning Twilight into the next alicorn. Such a change to Twilight would fundamentally alter her as a character and would completely distort all the relationships that have been established with her friends. Now that I think about it for a moment such a change to Twilight would completely upend the show since the whole premise has been to show how Twilight learned about friendship through the other elements. By making Twilight into the next alicorn they would change those fundamental relationships and therefore the whole show.

I honestly think people are taking this show too a little too seriously. This is show is still aimed at younger audiences and most of them couldn't give too shits about all the intricacies of character development and story telling. Why can't we all just take a step back and enjoy the show for what it is? I mean we can speculate and theorize all we want to. I'm not saying we shouldn't, but we definitely don't need to allow our head-canons and fanons get in the way of us enjoying the show.

Also your explanation makes sense. There were a lot of things hinting at a story arc spanning across the season. We'll just have to wait and see what the guys at DHX have planned. They haven't let us down yet and I don't think they're going to.

Faust wanted to do a long story arc for season one, but Hasbro didn't want that. Same deal for season two.

Generally, the third seasons of tv series is when the writers get more freedom (after successful first and second seasons). Producers start to trust the creative machine, so to speak.

Then add to that: his low-key introduction and regenerative horn?

I have a pretty good feeling he'll be back.

I'm kinda on the fence about him coming back. In one hand he could because of the reasons you specified, but in the other hand I think he may have been just a one-time villain that acted as a catalyst for the season and Twilight's implied long story arc. I'd love to see King Sombra come back though. I think he has a lot of potential. I guess we'll just have to wait and find out.

you have no proof , only speculation , those complaints are entirely valid , the very idea that twi needs an advance in any kind of study when she already took down 1 of the 2 god princesses and their arch nemesis the embodiment of chaos itself is completely obsured , that isn't going to happen.....

To be honest, the biggest badass factor that most people appear to be overlooking (from my point of view, anyways), is that he was a f***ing UNICORN. Not a changeling queen, not a draconequus, not an alicorn, a unicorn. A unicorn so powerful and evil that both Celestia and Luna had to intervene. A unicorn so powerful, that before he was banished, he cursed an entire kingdom into disappearing for over a millenium.

The only thing I can say is that Cadence was replicating the force that the Crystal Heart used to protect the Crystal Empire from dark forces. Which would make sense as to why he could not breach the barrier.

:iconrarityangryplz: I am not whining, I am complaining.

But seriously, I hope the points you're making to explain the Darth Maul of this series are true. I'd love to see a drawn out development happen, but at face value, this season's start was not very encouraging.

Winged Twilight would be jumping the shark.... and I hope that's not where they take things. =P

Well there's just no idea behind him. No motive, he simply just took the crystal kingdom with no fuss. If he were like other villans then he would have a motive of some sorts. Discord was he thought that life is chaos so why live with order? Nightmare moon was she was being neglected by her entire kingdom. Chyallis was the need for her hive to feed/survive by any means possible. You say that he will be back, but I'm not so sure. From my perspective the writing team was all over the place with their theme and their script, as if they had too many people in the room and they couldn't settle on an idea.
It would be nice if Sombra came back at the end of the season for another go but as it stands I really can't take too much stock in that

In particular, I liked the song at the end.

As well as the moral/lesson...
...Trusting yourself--believing that you have the abilities to overcome a difficult situation, and being able to trust your own insight. It's a lesson that I (personally) needed to be reminded of.

The whole idea of using love/harmony to displace/expel fear... Balance is important for a healthy life.

I also loved the design of the Crystal palace, as it reminds me of Azadi Tower [link].
And I enjoyed the Game of Thrones reference... heh.

You know if iran wasn't in such a complicated diplomatic state I would love to visit. Oh, but yes the writers manage to squeeze a good lesson into every episode but really I think that with the season premieres and finales they tone down the focus on morals in order to make the episodes more entertaining. I have no disagreement on the premise of the lesson they were trying to teach but they didn't focus on it all that much. From the second twilight stepped on the train to scene where she finds the crystal heart the moral of the story wasn't advanced, or even touched. I'm just saying that the writers could have delved deeper into the superb moral they had set the stage for.

(also i'm going to have to disagree with you on what the moral was "i think there were two different ones at the beginning and the end" look, just watch both times that twiliyght talks to celestia i think it'll make the morals a little more lucid.)

I agree that Twilight is being groomed for something big. But just today I realized she has been for a LONG time.
First off, let me say that I don't really follow any discussions on forums. So if this is already been discussed and debated I apologize. This is just my reaction to it.The recent episode of "my Little pony: friendship is magic" Dropped some large hints that Twilight Sparkle has some big destiny ahead of her that we have not been informed of yet.
I have suspected this ever since the flashback in "Cutie Mark Chronicles" where she went Avatar-state in trying to do some magic. But today, I was re-watching the Canterlot wedding episode. Something in it struck me that had not occurred to me before.
Why does a unicorn have a princess for her babysitter? Did Cadence need extra money for pizza?
Bearing that in mind, look at the dialogue between cadence and young twilight.

Young Twilight Sparkle: I am so lucky to have you as my foalsitter!
Young Cadance: I'm the one who's lucky, Twilight.
Young Twilight Sparkle: [scoffs] You're a princess. I'm just a regular old unicorn.
Young Cadance: You are anything but a regular old unicorn.

You see?! THEY KNEW!! Possibly from her birth, they've known that twilight was something special. They have been watching out for her. And they are guiding her towards some big destiny.

I don't think we'll see a winged twilight sparkle honestly. I think, given the cover of the book, that that book is starswirl the bearded's book, and that she'll have to continue from his studies of something.
